How to Measure Your Till Roll in 3 Steps

Grab the roll (or the empty core) and a ruler.

  1. Roll Width — Measure straight across the paper from edge to edge. This is the most critical measurement. Too wide and it won't sit in the printer; too narrow and it'll print off-centre or jam.
  2. Roll Diameter — Measure across the full roll when wound. A smaller diameter will always fit, but too large and the printer lid won't close.
  3. Core Diameter (I.D.) — Almost always 12.7mm in Ireland. Worth checking if your machine is older or imported.

Sizes are written as: Width × Diameter × Core — so 80×70×12.7 means 80mm wide, 70mm diameter, 12.7mm core.

Common Till Roll Sizes Explained

57×40mm Thermal Credit Card Rolls — the most common size for card machines and compact receipt printers across Ireland. If you have a card reader and you're not sure, start here.

80×70mm Thermal Till Rolls — standard for full EPOS systems and larger receipt printers. Common in busy hospitality environments.

80×80gsm Thermal Rolls — the go-to for Epson TM-T88 and most EPOS receipt printers. Longer roll, higher volume.

57×55mm Cash Register Rolls — for older-style mechanical cash registers (Casio, Sharp, Sam4s). Check whether your machine needs thermal or ink-ribbon paper.

Choosing the Correct Till Roll — What to Always Match

When ordering, always confirm:

  • ✓ Paper width
  • ✓ Roll diameter
  • ✓ Core size
  • ✓ Thermal or non-thermal paper

If two rolls share the same width but different diameters, the smaller diameter will usually work fine. A larger diameter may not fit inside the printer housing or allow the lid to close.

Thermal vs Non-Thermal — Does It Matter?

Yes, and it's an easy mistake to make.

  • Thermal rolls — heat-activated, no ink required. Used in virtually all modern card machines and EPOS printers.
  • Non-thermal (ink ribbon) rolls — for older mechanical tills that physically strike the paper.

Quick test: Scratch the paper with your fingernail. If it turns black, it's thermal.

Using non-thermal paper in a thermal printer won't damage the machine — it'll just print blank. Using thermal paper in a ribbon printer will also print blank and may leave residue on the print head over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common till roll size in Ireland?

57 × 40mm thermal rolls are the most common size for Irish credit card machines, including SumUp, Ingenico, Verifone and PAX terminals.

How do I know if my till roll is thermal?

Scratch the surface of the paper with your fingernail. If it leaves a dark mark, it's thermal paper. If nothing happens, it's plain (non-thermal) paper.

Why is my receipt printing blank?

The most common cause is the roll being loaded the wrong way — thermal paper only prints on one side (the coated side). Try flipping the roll. If it still prints blank, check that you're using thermal paper and not plain paper.

Can I use a smaller diameter roll?

Yes. A smaller diameter roll will work as long as the width is correct. You'll just need to replace it more frequently as it holds less paper.

Can I use 80×70 instead of 80×80?

Usually yes — the width is the same (80mm), so it will fit the printer. The 70mm diameter roll is slightly smaller, meaning it holds a little less paper per roll. It won't cause any damage.

Will a wider roll fit my printer?

No. Width must always match the printer specification. A roll that's too wide will jam or won't seat correctly in the paper bay.

Does core size matter?

In most cases, no — 12.7mm is the standard core size for virtually all card machines and EPOS printers in Ireland. It only becomes relevant with older or imported machines that use a different spindle size.

What size does my credit card machine use?

The vast majority of credit card machines in Ireland — SumUp, Ingenico, Verifone, PAX — use 57 × 40mm thermal rolls. Check the machine compatibility chart above for your specific model.

What size receipt paper fits my EPOS printer?

Most EPOS receipt printers (Epson TM-T88, Star TSP100, Bixolon SRP-350) use 80 × 80mm thermal rolls. Check your printer manual or the label inside the paper bay to confirm.

How long does each till roll last?

It depends on print volume. A 57 × 40mm roll typically prints 10–15 metres of receipts. An 80 × 70mm roll prints around 56 metres. Busy environments (restaurants, supermarkets) will go through rolls much faster than low-volume settings.

Can thermal paper be used in ribbon printers?

No. Ribbon printers require plain (non-thermal) paper. Thermal paper in a ribbon printer will print blank and may leave a coating residue on the print mechanism.

What happens if I use cheap thermal paper in my terminal?

Low-quality thermal paper can leave dust and coating residue on the print head, causing streaky prints, jamming, and eventually print head failure. Replacing a print head typically costs €350–€400. OEM-spec rolls protect your terminal investment.

How many rolls are in each box?

It varies by product. Our 57 × 40mm rolls come in boxes of 20 or 50. Our 80 × 70mm rolls typically come in boxes of 20. Bulk pricing is available — contact us for pallet or high-volume quotes.

Which receipt roll do I need for a kitchen printer?

Kitchen printers typically use 76 × 70mm 1 Ply, 2-ply (one white copy, one yellow copy) and 3 Ply rolls (one white copy, one yellow copy and one pink copy). Some newer kitchen printers use 80mm thermal rolls — check your printer model to confirm.

When can I expect delivery within Ireland?

We offer FREE delivery across Ireland. Order before 1:00 PM and we dispatch same day from our Dublin 12 warehouse — typically next-day delivery to Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Belfast, Sligo, Donegal, Cavan and Derry.
