Price Gun Labels: Sizes, Colours and Which Labels Fit Your Gun

Most handheld price guns in Ireland take one of two label sizes: 26x12mm for a single line gun such as the PUMA PJ6, or 26x16mm for a double line gun such as the PUMA PJ16. The size has to match your gun, because it is built into the feed. Our single line labels come 1,400 to a roll and our double line labels 1,000 to a roll, both 10 rolls to a box, in white or fluorescent orange. Most use permanent adhesive, and there are removable (peelable) white labels in both sizes for items where the price needs to come off cleanly. Delivery across Ireland is free on these labels.

What size price gun labels do I need?

If you only ever print a price, single line labels are the better buy. You get 1,400 on a roll instead of 1,000, so they work out cheaper per label. The quickest way to check your size is the old box, or measure the label on the backing strip.

Which guns do the labels fit?

26x12mm single line labels fit the PUMA PJ6, plus Motex, Avery, Sato, Meto and most standard single line guns.

26x16mm double line labels, in white, white removable or fluorescent orange, fit these 2 line guns:

White or fluorescent orange?

White is the everyday choice: clean, easy to read and right for normal prices. Fluorescent orange does a different job. Customers spot it from the end of the aisle, so it suits reduced stock, offers and short-dated food.

A simple system a lot of shops use: white for normal prices, orange for anything reduced. Staff can see at a glance what has already been marked down. Both colours come in both sizes and fit the same guns.

Permanent or removable?

• Permanent adhesive holds on card, plastic, glass and tins, and in fridges and freezers too, so a price put on on Monday is still there on Friday. It also makes it harder for anyone to swap labels between items. Most of our range is permanent.
• Removable (also called peelable) adhesive lifts off cleanly without leaving residue on most surfaces. Use it on gifts, books, cards, glass, crockery and anything you reprice often. We stock white removable labels in both sizes: 26x12mm for single line guns and 26x16mm for double line guns.

Keep a box of each if you sell both groceries and gifts, and switch rolls as needed.

How do I load a new roll of price gun labels?

1. Open the label chamber. On most guns the side cover or the top of the handle swings open.
2. Seat the roll on the spindle so the labels feed from the bottom, facing out.
3. Peel the first few labels off the backing so you have a bare strip to thread.
4. Thread the backing strip under the print head and around the feed wheel, following the arrows moulded into the gun.
5. Close the chamber and squeeze a few times until a label appears under the applicator roller.

Set the price on the number bands first, and test on a scrap of card.

Why is my price gun jamming or printing faint?

• Jamming: usually the wrong label size, or the backing threaded the wrong way. Check the roll against the gun and re-thread along the arrows.
• Labels not peeling off the backing: the strip is not wrapped tightly around the peel edge. Re-thread it tight.
• Faint or patchy print: the ink roller is dry. Rollers are cheap to replace.
• Smudged print: a new roller can be over-inked for the first few labels. Fire off a handful and it settles.
