Scale Rolls and Labels for Butchers, Delis and Supermarkets

Weigh scales print on one of three things: die-cut labels, continuous labels, or plain thermal receipt rolls. To reorder the right one, you need the paper width, the core size (scales often use 38mm or 40 to 42mm cores), and whether your scale prints labels with gaps between them or one continuous strip. All of them are direct thermal, so there is no ribbon.

What types of scale paper are there?

Look at your old roll. If the back peels off, it is a label. If there are small gaps between labels, it is die-cut. If it is plain paper, it is a receipt roll.

What do I need to measure on a scale roll?

1. Width. Measure across the backing liner, or across the paper for receipt rolls.
2. Label height, for die-cut labels. Measure one label from top to bottom, not including the gap.
3. Core size. Measure the inside of the cardboard core. Scales are much fussier about this than tills, because the roll sits on a spindle. Our core size guide explains why.
4. Roll diameter, so the roll fits the compartment.

Photograph the old roll and its box label before you throw them away. It saves a lot of guesswork.

Which scale labels suit a deli or butcher counter?

• Standard price and weight labels: the 57x60mm scale labels, suited to CAS, Avery Berkel and Dibal scales.
• Smaller deli pots and tubs: the 38x70mm deli scale labels, 600 per roll.
• Variable-length labels: 60mm continuous scale labels for scales that cut to size.
• Bizerba scales: 60x49mm Bizerba-compatible labels on a 40mm core, or Bizerba linerless rolls.

Are linerless scale labels worth it?

Linerless labels have no backing paper. The adhesive sits on the back of the label itself, and the scale cuts each one to length. The benefits are real:

• No liner waste. No bags of shiny backing paper at the end of the day.
• More labels per roll. Without the liner, more label fits in the same roll size, so you change rolls less often.
• One roll for different label lengths. The scale decides the length.

The catch is that your scale must be built or set up for linerless media. A standard die-cut scale cannot use them. We cover this in more detail in our linerless labels guide.

What about scale receipt rolls?

Some scales print a customer receipt instead of, or as well as, a label. These use plain thermal paper on a larger core than a till roll.
