Thermal Ticket Rolls: 80x100mm and 80x150mm Explained

Thermal ticket rolls are 80mm wide rolls on a 25mm core, made from heavier paper than a normal till roll. The 80x100mm size is the everyday choice for betting slips, queue tickets and event tickets. The 80x150mm size holds far more paper for busy printers. 80gsm paper is the standard weight, and 105gsm feels more like card and stands up to more handling.

If a ticket gets folded, pocketed and handed back later, it needs to survive the trip. That is the whole point of ticket paper.

What makes a ticket roll different?

• Heavier paper. A normal till roll is usually 48gsm to 58gsm. Ticket rolls start at 80gsm, so they feel stiffer and last longer. Our GSM guide explains the numbers.
• Bigger rolls. 100mm or 150mm across, so the printer goes longer between changes.
• A 25mm core. Ticket and kiosk printers usually hold the roll on a spindle, so the core size matters.

80x100mm or 80x150mm?

Check your printer takes a 150mm roll before ordering the bigger size. If the holder only fits 100mm, the larger roll simply won't go in.

80gsm or 105gsm?

• 80gsm: sturdy enough for most tickets and cheaper per roll. Start here.
• 105gsm: closer to thin card. Worth it when tickets are kept for a while, handed back at a counter, or used outdoors.

Heavier paper is thicker, so a 105gsm roll holds a little less paper than an 80gsm roll of the same diameter.
