What Is a Linerless Label?

A standard label roll has two layers: the label material on top and a silicone-coated backing paper (liner) underneath that protects the adhesive and feeds through the printer. A linerless label has no backing paper — the adhesive is on the underside of the label material and the roll is wound so the adhesive doesn’t stick to the label face above it. The printer uses a specially coated platen roller to prevent the adhesive sticking to the mechanism. The result: no liner waste, more label material per roll diameter, and variable-length labels cut to size at print time. The trade-off is that linerless labels only work in printers specifically designed for them.
