Providers like Elavon, Worldpay and Payzone supply terminals made by Ingenico, Verifone or PAX, and most of those take a 57x40mm roll. The main exceptions are the Verifone VX680 (57x35mm), the Worldpay VX810 (57x45mm), the Square Terminal (57x35mm) and the Poynt (coreless 57x25mm).

Why does the provider not tell me the roll size?
Most payment providers in Ireland do not make their own card machines. They buy terminals from manufacturers such as Ingenico, Verifone and PAX, add their own logo and software, and rent them to you. So an "Elavon machine" might be an Ingenico iWL251, and a "Worldpay machine" might be a Verifone VX810.
The model number is usually printed on a label on the back or underneath the terminal. Once you have it, the roll size is easy.
Quick check: measure the old roll. 57mm wide and about 40mm across the full roll is 57x40mm, the most common size by far.

The VX810 is the one to watch. It takes a larger roll than the rest, and a 57x40mm roll will run out quickly in it.

Do I have to buy rolls from my payment provider?
No. Card machine rolls are a standard consumable, and any good quality roll in the right size works. Buying from your provider is often more expensive and slower, and some add delivery charges.

Yes. Any good quality roll in the correct size works in your terminal. You do not need to buy them from your payment provider.
