How Many Receipts Do You Get From a Till Roll?

A standard 80x70mm till roll gives most shops somewhere around 200 to 250 receipts, and a 57x40mm card machine roll gives roughly 100. The real number depends on how long your receipts are. A two-line coffee order uses a fraction of the paper that a 30-item grocery shop does, so the quickest way to know your number is to measure one of your own receipts.

How many receipts are on each size of roll?

Paper per roll depends on the roll diameter (the second number in the size) and the thickness of the paper. These are typical figures for the sizes Irish businesses use most.

The receipt counts assume a typical receipt of about 15 to 20cm on an 80mm roll and about 13 to 16cm on a card roll. Treat them as a starting point, not a promise.

Why the second number matters. 80x70 means 80mm wide and 70mm across the full roll. A bigger diameter holds more paper, and because it is a circle, a few extra millimetres of diameter adds a surprising amount of length.

How do I work out my own number?

It takes two minutes and gives you a far better answer than any chart.

1. Print a normal receipt. Pick an average sale, not your biggest or smallest.
2. Measure it from the top edge to the tear line, in centimetres.
3. Divide the paper length by your receipt length. For an 80x70mm roll, 4,500cm divided by an 18cm receipt is 250 receipts.
4. Double it if you print two copies. Card terminals often print a merchant copy and a customer copy for every sale.

Then compare that to how many transactions you do in a day, and you know how often the roll gets changed.

How many receipts are in a box?

Multiply your receipts per roll by the rolls in the box. Using the typical figures above:

So a receipt costs well under a cent either way. The real cost of running out is the queue while someone hunts for a roll, which is why most of our customers keep a spare box in the back.

How can I make each roll last longer?

A few small changes can cut paper use by a third or more without annoying anyone.

• Ask before printing. Most EPOS systems and card terminals can prompt "Receipt?" instead of printing every time. Plenty of customers say no.
• Turn off the merchant copy on the card machine if your provider allows it and you reconcile from the terminal report instead.
• Shrink the header. A big logo and five lines of address at the top of every receipt adds up. Keep it short.
• Trim the footer. One line of thanks beats a paragraph of terms on every sale.
• Use a bigger roll where the printer allows it. An 80x80mm roll in a printer built for 80x80 means fewer changes. Check first, because an 80x80 roll will not close in a printer made for 80x70. Our till roll size chart covers this.

Do heavier paper rolls give more receipts?
