Why POS Printer Paper Jams Happen

A jammed receipt printer can stop orders at a till, café counter or kitchen pass. The usual causes are straightforward: a torn piece of paper in the feed path, an incorrectly loaded roll, paper that is too wide or too large for the compartment, debris on the rollers, or a blocked auto-cutter.

Most modern 80mm thermal receipt printers use drop-in loading. There is normally no spindle running through the roll. The roll sits in the compartment and feeds under the print head, so width, outside diameter and loading direction matter more than the cardboard core size.

How to Clear a Paper Jam Safely

  1. Stop printing and switch the printer off. Disconnect the power if the printer manual tells you to do so.
  2. Let the print head cool. After heavy printing, wait at least one minute before touching anything inside. A thermal print head can be hot.
  3. Open the paper cover gently. Do not force a cover that is held shut by trapped paper or the cutter.
  4. Remove the roll and visible fragments. Pull paper in the normal feed direction where possible. Do not use a knife, screwdriver or other sharp metal object near the head, platen roller or sensors.
  5. Check the feed path. Use a torch to look for scraps around the roller, guides, sensors and cutter slot.

If the cover will not open, or the cutter blade is stuck forward, use the printer model's manual release procedure. Forcing it can damage the cutter assembly.

How to Clean the Print Head and Rollers

Follow the cleaning instructions for your exact printer model. Epson, Star and many other thermal-printer manufacturers specify isopropyl alcohol or ethanol for the print head, usually applied to a cotton swab or lint-free cloth. Do not pour liquid into the printer and do not use water around the heating elements.

  1. Switch off the printer, disconnect it if required, and allow the head to cool.
  2. Remove the paper roll.
  3. Lightly moisten a cotton swab or lint-free cloth with the alcohol grade specified by the manufacturer.
  4. Wipe the print-head surface gently. Do not scrub or touch it with fingers.
  5. Clean the platen roller only with the method stated in the printer manual. Rotate it by hand only if the manual permits this.
  6. Allow all cleaned parts to dry fully before reloading paper and restoring power.

Clean when print becomes faint, patchy or streaked, when residue is visible, or at the interval in the printer manual. A fixed once-per-shift routine is unnecessary for most machines and increases the chance of accidental damage.

Reload the Roll Correctly

Place the roll squarely in the compartment and pull a short, straight length of paper past the cover before closing it. The roll should turn freely without rubbing hard against either side.

Thermal paper prints on its coated side. If a test receipt comes out blank, the roll may be loaded backwards rather than jammed. Turn the roll over and print one short test receipt. You can also scratch each side of the loose paper with a fingernail; the thermal side normally makes a dark mark.

Watch that single test receipt feed and cut cleanly. There is no need to run metres of paper through the printer.

Clear an Auto-Cutter Jam

Cutter jams are common in busy hospitality and retail printers. A crooked paper edge, a partly torn receipt or paper dust can stop the blade returning to its home position.

  • Switch off the printer and let it cool.
  • Remove loose paper without pulling against the blade.
  • Check the cutter slot for small scraps.
  • If the cover remains locked, use the manual cutter-release wheel or access point described for that printer model.
  • Reload the roll with a clean, straight leading edge and print one test receipt.

If the cutter repeatedly sticks, grinds or fails to return, stop using it and arrange service. Continued resets can turn a paper blockage into a damaged cutter.

Choose the Correct Paper Size

Receipt-roll sizes are normally stated as width × outside diameter. An 80×70mm roll is approximately 80mm wide and up to 70mm across when new. Check the printer label or manual, because the maximum diameter varies by model.

  • 80×70mm thermal: widely used in full-size EPOS receipt printers.
  • 80×60mm or 80×40mm thermal: used where the paper compartment takes a smaller roll.
  • 57mm thermal: common in card terminals and compact receipt printers. The required diameter depends on the terminal model.
  • 76×70mm bond: commonly associated with 1-ply or 2-ply impact and kitchen printers. Do not assume it is thermal paper.

To order accurately, read the printer model number and the paper specification inside the cover or in its manual. If measuring an existing roll, measure straight across the paper for width and across the full roll for outside diameter. Do not rely on the cardboard core alone.

BPA-Free and Phenol-Free Paper

BPA has been restricted in thermal paper in the EU since January 2020, so BPA-free is a compliance baseline rather than evidence that a roll will prevent jams. Phenol-free is a separate paper specification and should not be presented as a cure for feeding or cutter faults.

Jam performance depends more directly on correct dimensions, clean cutting, consistent winding, storage and compatibility with the printer. Ask for the paper specification if phenol chemistry matters to your purchasing policy, but choose the roll size from the printer manufacturer's requirements.

Prevent Future Jams

  • Remove loose scraps and paper dust when replacing a roll.
  • Keep the paper path and cutter slot clear.
  • Clean the head and roller when print quality drops or at the interval stated in the printer manual.
  • Do not pull receipts sideways against the cutter.
  • Keep spare rolls in their packaging, away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
  • As a practical general range, store thermal rolls below 25°C and around 40–65% relative humidity unless the paper datasheet specifies otherwise.
  • Match the roll width and maximum diameter to the exact printer model.
