The best thermal paper for a retail POS is the roll that matches your printer on three measurements: width, diameter and core. Get those right first. What size roll does my POS printer take?
Roll sizes are written as width x diameter. An 80x70mm roll is 80mm wide and 70mm across the wound roll. The fastest way to check yours is to take out the roll that's in the printer and measure it, or look up the printer model. Width isn't flexible. An 80mm roll won't go into a 76mm printer, and a 76mm roll will wander about in an 80mm one. Diameter is about what fits in the housing: too big and the lid won't close, too small and you're changing rolls all day.
One thing that catches people out: if your 76mm roll goes into a kitchen or docket printer, it's probably standard bond paper, not thermal. Scratch the paper with your fingernail. If it leaves a dark mark, it's thermal. If not, it's bond.

Does the core size matter?
Sometimes. Many 80mm receipt printers are drop-in, where the roll just sits in a cradle, so the core hardly matters. On printers with a spindle it does. Too small and the roll won't go on. Which paper weight (GSM) should I choose?
GSM is grams per square metre. Heavier paper feels better in the hand and prints with more contrast.
- 58gsm: the standard weight, and right for most counters.
- 65gsm: sharper print and a more solid feel. Our 65gsm 80x70mm rolls are €18.50 + VAT a box of 20 right now, which makes them an easy upgrade for customer-facing counters.
- 80gsm long life: our 80x80 80gsm rolls are rated for 10-year fade resistance. They suit credit unions, hotels, bookmakers and anywhere a receipt is kept as a record.

Do I need BPA-free or phenol-free paper?
Since January 2020, EU Regulation 2016/2235 has restricted BPA in thermal paper. So BPA-free is the normal standard now, and all our standard thermal rolls are BPA-free.
Phenol-free paper goes a step further. It uses no bisphenol developers at all, including BPS, the most common BPA replacement. The print looks the same. Pharmacies, healthcare providers and businesses with strict purchasing policies tend to ask for it.
It does cost more. Our 80x70mm phenol-free rolls are €38.99 + VAT a box of 20, about 95c a roll more than standard 80x70mm. On 57x40mm card rolls the gap is closer to 20c a roll. If your printer has room for an 80mm diameter, the 80x80 80gsm is the one we'd point you to. You change rolls less often in a rush, and the receipts hold up for years. For most other counters, the 80x70mm is the safe everyday choice.

How should I store thermal paper?
Heat, sunlight, damp and contact with plastics or chemicals are what fade thermal paper. Keep spare boxes sealed in a cool, dry stockroom, away from ovens, radiators, windows and cleaning products. For receipts you need to keep, store them somewhere dark and dry, and keep them out of plastic wallets, which can fade the print.

What are the most common buying mistakes?
- Ordering by width alone. The right width in the wrong diameter still won't fit.
- Mixing up thermal and bond. Thermal paper won't print in an impact kitchen printer, and bond won't print in a thermal one.
- Going for the cheapest unbranded roll. A poor coating leaves residue on the print head, which leads to faint print and jams. Our paper jam troubleshooting guide covers the fixes.

How do I know if my printer takes thermal or bond paper?
Scratch the old paper with your fingernail. Thermal paper leaves a dark mark, and bond paper doesn't. Thermal printers print with heat and need no ribbon. Impact printers, common in kitchens, use an ink ribbon and standard bond paper. Putting the wrong paper in either one will give you blank receipts.
