What Roll Does My Card Machine Take? Ingenico, Verifone, Clover, SumUp, Dojo and More

Most card machines in Ireland take a 57x40mm thermal roll. That covers the Ingenico iCT and iWL range, Verifone V200c, V400c, V400m and VX520, PAX A920, Castles Saturn 1000, Dojo Go and most terminals issued by AIB, Bank of Ireland, Elavon and Worldpay. The main exceptions are Clover Mini and Clover Mobile, older Verifone VX570, VX810 and VX820 units, which take 57x45mm, compact readers like the SumUp 3G, which takes 57x30mm, and the Square Terminal and Verifone VX670/VX680, which take 57x35mm.

What roll size does each card machine take?

All of these are 57mm wide thermal rolls. The second number is the diameter, which is what changes from model to model.

How do I check which card machine model I have?

You do not need to guess. There are three quick ways to find it.

1. Look at the label on the back or underneath. The model name (for example "iCT250" or "V400m") is printed next to the serial number.
2. Check the screen. Many terminals show the model on the start-up screen or in the admin menu.
3. Read the old roll box. If you still have one, the size is printed on it. Match that, not the brand.

If none of those work, open the paper flap and measure the roll. The width will be 57mm. Then measure across a full roll: 25, 30, 35, 40 or 45mm. Our till roll sizes guide walks through it step by step.

Why do some card machines take a different size?

It comes down to the size of the paper bay. Countertop and full-size portable terminals have room for a 40mm or 45mm roll, which means fewer changes on a busy day. Pocket-sized readers like the SumUp 3G have a shallow bay, so they need a shorter 30mm roll.

Here's the practical rule: you can always go smaller, never bigger. A 57x40 roll will fit a terminal built for 57x45, it just runs out sooner. A 57x45 roll in a 57x40 terminal will stop the flap closing and can jam the printer.

Do I need bank-branded rolls for my terminal?

No. Your bank or payment provider may sell its own branded rolls, but you are not tied to them. What matters is the size and the paper quality, not the logo on the box.

The quality part is worth a second thought, though. Cheap, low-grade thermal paper can shed dust into the print head and fade faster. If you have been buying from your provider, it's usually a good deal cheaper to buy the same spec by the box of 50.

All current Ingenico iCT and iWL terminals in Ireland take a 57x40mm thermal roll. That includes the iCT220, iCT250, iWL220, iWL250 and iWL252.

What roll does a Verifone terminal take?

Newer Verifone models (V200c, V240m, V400c, V400m, VX520, Carbon Mobile 5) take 57x40mm. The older VX570, VX810 and VX820 take 57x45mm, and the wireless VX670 and VX680 take 57x35mm.

What size roll does a Dojo card machine use?

The Dojo Go takes a standard 57x40mm thermal roll with a small core.

What paper does a Clover Mini take?

The Clover Mini and Clover Mobile take 57x45mm thermal rolls. The Clover Flex takes 57mm Clover Flex rolls, and the Clover Station printer takes 80x70mm.

Can I use 57x40 rolls in a machine that takes 57x45?

Yes. The width is the same, so it fits and prints normally. You will just change the roll a little more often. Going the other way (a bigger roll in a smaller bay) does not work.

Are card machine rolls the same as till rolls?

They are both thermal paper, but card machine rolls are narrower (57mm) than most receipt printer rolls (80mm). A till roll from your EPOS printer will not fit your card terminal.
