What PPWR and the PFAS Limits Mean for Your Takeaway Packaging

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) entered into force in February 2025 and generally applies from 12 August 2026. Its limits on PFAS in food-contact packaging also apply from that date. Paper, board and moulded-fibre food packaging can contain treatments for grease or water resistance, so material alone is not proof of compliance. Ask the supplier for product-specific evidence rather than treating a kraft colour or a ‘compostable’ label as a PFAS test result. The Single-Use Plastics rules still matter for affected products; they are not a substitute for PPWR checks.

• Written confirmation of food-contact suitability and compliance with applicable PPWR PFAS limits for the exact product.
• Material and coating specifications, including whether a plastic lining is present.
• Evidence behind any compostability claim, such as certification to EN 13432 where applicable, plus local waste-collection guidance.
• Pack quantity, dimensions and a current unit price.
