How do coloured thermal rolls work?

They work exactly like white thermal paper. The print head heats the coating and the text appears in black. The only difference is a coloured tint in the paper, so you get black text on a blue, pink or red background.

Print contrast is slightly lower than on white, so very small text can be a touch harder to read on the darker colours. For normal receipts and kitchen tickets it is not an issue.

When do coloured thermal rolls actually help?

• Kitchen and bar tickets. If orders print on separate thermal printers, give each station its own colour. Blue for the bar, pink for the kitchen, for example. Nobody picks up the wrong ticket.
• Refunds, voids and managers' reports. Load a coloured roll on a second printer used for refunds, so they are easy to spot at cash-up.
• Departments in a larger shop. Deli, off-licence and grocery each print on a different colour, which makes end-of-day sorting quicker.
• Events, raffles and cloakrooms. A colour per day or per event stops old tickets being reused.
• Branding. A pink receipt from a beauty salon or boutique is memorable, and it matches the rest of the shop.

How do I set up a colour system?

1. Pick one job for colour. Station, department or ticket type. Trying to code everything at once confuses people.
2. Assign one colour per printer and label the printer so the right roll always goes back in.
3. Put a small key on the wall where tickets are collected.
4. Keep a full box of each colour on site. If one runs out and someone loads white instead, the system breaks.

Are coloured thermal rolls worth the extra cost?

Coloured rolls cost roughly twice as much as white. On a printer that runs all day, that adds up. On a second printer used for refunds, bar tickets or a single department, the extra is small, and the time saved sorting tickets usually covers it.
