How do direct thermal and thermal transfer labels work?

• Direct thermal: the label itself has a coating that turns black when heated. The print head heats tiny dots and the image appears. No ribbon, no ink.
• Thermal transfer: the label is plain. The printer heats a ribbon coated in wax or resin, and that melts onto the label. You buy ribbons as well as labels.

Most modern desktop label printers can do direct thermal. Printers that also take a ribbon can do both.

How can I tell which type of label I have?

Use the fingernail test. Scratch the label quickly and firmly.

• A dark mark appears: it is direct thermal.
• No mark: it is a thermal transfer label, and the printer needs a ribbon.

To check the printer, open it. If there is a ribbon roll on spindles above the labels, it is set up for thermal transfer. If there is just the label roll, it is running direct thermal.

Which label type should I use?

Choose direct thermal for:

Why do direct thermal labels fade or go black?

The same coating that makes them print with heat keeps reacting to heat, light and some chemicals. So direct thermal labels can:

• Darken if left near heat, such as a hot van dashboard or a warm kitchen shelf.
• Smudge if rubbed hard or exposed to oils, alcohol or some plastics.
