Never pull the paper manually — always use the feed key. Open the paper compartment lid on the top of the unit, drop the roll in with the thermal (shiny) side facing the print head, and press the feed key until paper appears at the front slot. If the first receipt prints blank, the roll is in the wrong way — flip it and feed again. Trim any rough edges at the start of the roll before inserting.
